Send a Raven

Four ways to reach us. Ravens preferred. Gulls accepted if it’s urgent.

The Harbor ☠ Send a Raven

How to Reach Us

Four approved methods, in descending order of romance.

  • By Raven The fleet’s own. Fastest and most dignified. Do not write in red ink; ravens consider it rude and have opinions.
  • By Gull Our carrier gull, Envelope. Do not feed him forms. He loses them in the current. The current is not his fault.
  • By Bottle Any message in a corked bottle thrown at the fleet within 200 yards counts as sent. The 200 yards is a suggestion.
  • By Lantern Three short flashes at dusk means "hello." Five means "the coffee is gone" and is urgent.

Cast Off a Message

The Quartermaster replies within one tide, weather permitting.

Response Times, By Method

By raven: one tide. Messages are read aloud at the evening meal, which is the college’s only real broadcast network.

By gull: whenever Envelope feels it. Envelope has carried 1,204 messages and lost 3. The 3 were all from people named Gary.

By bottle: one tide, plus the walk back to shore for you. We keep the bottles. They become art. You’re welcome.

By the form above: the fastest. The Quartermaster reads it on a brass tablet, which is also the only screen on the island.
